Welcome to Dubuque Emergency Physicians
Welcome EM physician to our recruiting website and our invitation to join the Tri-State's premier democratic EM practice.  Join your EM residency trained peers in a challenging and rewarding lifetime partnership.

You will have the full range of experience the area offers with community doctors who call you by your first name.  You will  enjoy the respect and trust of a specialty  community physician workforce.

Our practice was started in 1985 and continues to expand and improve as we move from 6.5 doctors to 7 as an original ( the part time position) doctor retires at the end of this year.  We can accommodate a flexible candidate even before Jan 2009.

Retiring partner Dr. R Koehler

We want a future partner, after one year of employment, who plans on a lifetime relationship.  We welcome someone with an interest in improving our group practice and our position in the community.  Mercy Hospital employes our corporation and we as members are actively involved as an equal member of the Medical-Executive Staff.  DEP was the first group practice of EM in Iowa to enjoy Department status. Mr. Russell Knight is our long time CEO.  View his comments on Mercy and Dubuque

DEP has consisted of men and women primarily from  the Midwest, greater US residency programs, and Dubuque itself. Our ages range from 55 to 32. Married and single.   Partners are engaged in a wide variety of personal and professional interests.  Dr. Mark McKeon, a native Dubuquer, is a fully vested partner after joining us  several years ago from his MI residency.  View his comments on our job offer and his home Dubuque

Partnership offers a total package estimated at $300,000 per year for a fulltime person.  The first year as an employee lacks profit sharing and pension contributions.  DEP offers the full range of insurance coverages, including paid malpractice with physician owned and very stable insurer called MMIC.  This year we received rebates and a decrease rate. The employee and partners have equal salary payments of $120 per hour and equal shift  hours of 11 days, 8 overlapping, and 13 hours nights. The employee has an equal number and type of shifts.  An employee and partner have the same opportunity for extra work.  Dr Clark Williams became a partner in Jan 2008.  View his comments as the last hired and most recent partner

Advantages we enjoy in our 20, 000 volume practice include all specialty support except NeuroSurgery.  We have an active and aggressive cardiovascular and surgery practices with 2 cath tables and bypass capability. Inpatient psychiatry and detox services with psychiatric assessment nurses and social workers available to us. We have a new 12 bed department locally next to radiology and surgery.  We have EMR retrieval including ECG. We see approximately 1600 patients per person a year for a workload/salary value of ~$70 per person. 25% of our patients are admitted.  There is no urgent clinic attached or lesser providers to watch over.  We have no commitments outside of this hospital. This month we began advertising as a "zero wait to treatment" ED.  We have a diverse public and private patient mix from a 250, 000 person cachement area.  Trauma is work, farm, and highway related.  Primarily adult medical and Peds to a lesser extent.  Anesthesia is not in-house at night.

Mercy Hospital has CT techs until midnight and US, MRI, and NM always available.  Only our  Rads read imaging tests and are available, if needed, 24 hours a day.  Mercy has a strong management tradition and low turnover of nursing staff.  ED nursing does; ECG, IVs, triage, tubes,  and discharge - initiates; lab, xrays, and respiratory treatments.  Medical records provides voice dictation for our charting through Dictaphone- such that our records are  immediately readible and transferable.  The hospital has an active level II trauma service with regularly scheduled meetings and chair where we participate.  Mercy has a long tradition of EMS involvement, a past paramedic training program, and a EMS coordinator full time in the ED.  DEP members presently are responsible for almost all of the paramedic EMS medical direction in the city and tri-state area.

Our department has bi-monthly peds and adult meetings which include education and extensive quality review.  Dr. Doug Olk is our Peds advisor who attends the Peds meeting as an expert.   We frequently have informal group meetings afterwards.  All members are active in hospital committees.  We have had past Presidents of the County Medical Society.  We have participated with and actively support the only state EM residency program at the University of Iowa.  Dr. McKeon is President of Iowa AAEM.  Dr. Butzier is Sec-Treasurer of Med-EX Committee.
